Closing the Gap: Fostering Diversity in Venture Capital
Thursday, June 17, 2021 - 11:00 am - 11:45 am
Last year U.S. venture capital invested a record $150 billion in domestic startups. However, this same year, less than 3% of VC dollars went to Black and Latinx founders and a little over 2% to women-led startups. Although there has been mounting pressure on the industry to diversify their portfolio companies and investment teams for years, 2020 was the start of a more concerted effort to foster more equitable representation across the ecosystem with the formation of new funds and D&I commitments. We will discuss what progress has been made over the last year and explore what actionable steps need to be taken to help close the race and gender gaps in venture capital. About the speakers:Mercedes Bent is a Partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. She invests in consumer, fintech, EdTech, and US/LATAM. She is invested in and works with companies including Forage, StoriCard, Outschool, Flockjay, FCFL, United Dwelling, and Honeylove. Previously she served as an executive at a VR startup and a General Manager at General Assembly.
Sydney Sykes is the Co-founder of Blck VC; a non-profit focused on empowering Black investors and increasing diversity in Venture Capital. Sydney moved to San Francisco in 2016 to work as an early-stage investor at NEA. Then, after a few years in venture, she moved to Dolls Kill to work on the growth and strategy of their native brands.
Neal Sáles-Griffin is the Managing Director of Techstars Chicago and an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering, where he teaches entrepreneurship. He is an entrepreneur, teacher, and investor, co-founded the first beginner-focused in-person coding boot camp, and most recently ran for mayor of Chicago.
Jessica Lessin founded The Information in 2013 and is the publication’s Editor-in-Chief. She covered Silicon Valley and the technology industry for eight years at the Wall Street Journal. Jessica graduated from Harvard University in 2005 and lives in San Francisco.

I am FINALLY a SUPERHUMAN! I found out about it way back in 2018 and have been evangelizing about it ever since (as some of you can attest to). I joined the waiting list and was finally accepted last week. First, Super Human is a feature-rich email tool. Here are just a few examples of what it offers:
Instead of filtering spam, it uses AI to reverse and detect and highlight your most important messages.
It uses insights from Facebook, Linked In, and Twitter to help you connect with people in your Inbox more easily. For example, it always displays a person’s picture along with their email messages and links to their social platforms.
Features like “Undo Send,” Read statuses, follow-up automation, and the ability to snooze your inbox so you can focus without email interruptions are all built-in
It has a minimal, elegant interface to help you work in a clutter-free visual environment
You even get your own dedicated email Concierge to help you onboard with ease

Yall know I am with the WOO WOO! Let’s pull a card for the week and get inspired.
Card of the Week: Transformation 15 and Worth 3
(the deck offered up not one but TWO cards this week!)
Transformation 15: Freedom cannot be bought, sold, or bartered.
You are on fragile ground, and what you’re carrying will soon be birthed - whether it’s a new idea, new project, or a new awakening. You determine for yourself what it means and how it feels to be free - and we must have the freedom to raise what and whom we birth in safe, healthy environments. No matter what you decide, freedom means for you, know that it cannot be bought, sold, or bartered. Be free.
MANTRA: Please elevate me to a deeper knowing that freedom cannot be bought, sold, or bartered. Help me to remember that I have all I need to sweeten my life and destiny from within.
Worth 3: Humility is often the essence of sacrifice.
In life, we sacrifice a lot. In many ways, you may have given up on yourself in favor of things you viewed as more important or worthy. All the sacrifices you’ve made define your humility. However, be mindful not to sacrifice your own worth. Think of one thing that is taking too much of your time and has compromised your worth. Write it down, cross it out and release. Practice this as many times as you need to to begin to see it manifest in your life.
MANTRA: Beautify my humility with grace and assist me with words to use to never have to sacrifice my time, talent, or worth.
